An upward trend in the number of patent and trademark applications in China filed by Taiwanese

Based on the CTMO’s and TIPO’s statistics, the amount of patent and trademark applications in China filed by Taiwanese far outstripped the amount of same applications in Taiwan filed by Chinese within recent five years.

In terms of patent applications, the amount of applications in China filed by Taiwanese is more than 20,000 every year. There is an upward trend in the number of patent applications in Taiwan filed by Chinese in recent five years, but only several hundred applications per year. For example, only 694 patent applications in Taiwan were filed by Chinese in 2009.

As far as trademark applications are concerned, the amount of applications in China filed by Taiwanese is more than 9,000 every year. There is also an upward trend in the number of trademark applications in Taiwan filed by Chinese in recent five years, but only 1,186 trademark applications in Taiwan were field by Chinese in 2009.

Reviewing the abovementioned statistics, Taiwan government should take positive and active attitudes to reinforce protection of cross-strait intellectual property rights since it will be more advantageous to Taiwanese businesses than Chinese businesses.
